Voice
After three years of practical voice teaching experience as an adjunct voice teacher at Whitman College Nathan went on to supplement that knowledge with two years of graduate studies in vocal pedagogy at Washington State University. There he took Vocal Pedagogy and Advanced Vocal Pedagogy where he and his colleagues examined resources by renowned voice researchers Richard Miller, Scott McCoy, and Ingo Titze. He finished his tenure as a graduate student researching and writing a compilation of current knowledge on teaching singing to children and adolescents. With this background in teaching singing, Nathan is excited to share his experience with singers in the Greater Seattle Area.
To quote a mentor, "Singing is an athletic event." However, it is still not understood or treated as such by some people. Because singing involves the use of muscles and ligaments in coordination with each other and with the brain, basic training in the anatomy and physiology involved in singing can greatly enhance the experience. |
Singing Experience
Nathan has sung tenor with Whitman College's Chorale and Chamber Singers as a student and as a staff member. During this time, he soloed in such works as "Rejoice in the Lamb" and "Hymn to St. Cecilia" by Benjamin Britten, "Magnificat" by Johann Sebastian Bach, and the professional recording of Gwyneth Walker's music titled "An Hour to Dance". He also collaborated in a student concert production of "Jephte" by Giacomo Carissimi where he sang the role of Jephte. Nathan continued his choral experience singing with Washington State University School of Music's Concert Choir.
On stage, Nathan has performed a variety of roles including Ferrando in "Così fan tutte" (in English) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Fenton in "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor" (in English) by Otto Nicolai; the Head Waiter in "She Loves Me" by Jerry Bock, Joe Masteroff, and Sheldon Harnick; Augustus Colpoys in "Trelawny" by Julian Slade and Aubrey Woods; Dr. Blind in "Die Fledermaus" (in English) by Johann Strauss II; and Pugsley in "The Addams Family: The Musical" by Andrew Lippa, Rick Elice, and Marshall Brickman (lip sync performance due to health issues).
